When Is the Best Time to Prune Trees in Connecticut?
For most shade trees, the dormant season from late fall through early spring is ideal: the tree’s structure is easy to see, cuts heal quickly once growth resumes, and there is less risk of spreading disease. Oaks in particular should be pruned only while dormant to avoid attracting the beetles that spread oak wilt. Spring-flowering ornamentals such as dogwoods, lilacs, and cherries are pruned right after they bloom. Dead, broken, and hazardous limbs can and should be removed at any time of year.
